vintage family photos

i just looooove old photos. i have a large collection of them, and most are of people i don't even know that i collected when i worked at a thrift store. there's just something about that glimpse into the past that engulfs me and completely draws me in. recently, my uncle asked, "what is it about old photos that you like so much? i'm not nostolgic, so i don't get it." i didn't know how to respond, but i told him, "somebody has to be!" i'm perfectly content being that person.

i went through a box of old family photos and scanned some favorites. i hope you enjoy them as much as i do!

grandma's prom, 1949

this is a picture of my grandma (on the right) and her friend before prom. i included it because she was posing with this shirley temple doll shown in the foreground. when i was little, i would always ask my grandma to show it to me because she still had it and kept it safe in a cedar chest in her room. i never played with it because i was afraid i would break it, but i remember going to her house and asking to see it again and again. no matter how much stuff my grandma had piled on top the cedar chest, she always let me peek inside to see little shirley temple, dressed in her delicate bridal gown. my grandma died about ten years ago and now I'M the one with the fragile doll laying carefully in a box. finding this photo (and several others, as there was a whole series posed with the doll) made me realize how special it was to my grandma and how neat it is to share that all these years later.

i'm pretty sure the unknown man is an uncle of theirs that took them on the trip. i like that my grandma is wearing saddle shoes in this picture :)

i'm not sure who any of these boys are fishing in the photo, but i thought it was a neat old picture of garfield park. those who recognize the area in the picture would probably agree!

new summer to-do list

Photobucket

last year around this time josh and i sat down and made a list of all the things we wanted to do once the weather got nice. even though we knew we might not have the time or money to get some of it done, it was cool having something to refer back to and it became like a game getting things crossed off the list. looking back, i see that we accomplished almost half of our ideas from last year.

-explore the abandoned chippewa amusement park before it gets torn down
-revisit my favorite place, lakeview cemetery
-find new cemeteries to explore
-go to the cleveland police museum and see the torso murder exhibit
-go to some train museum that josh knows about (hopefully there will be some boxcar hobos there, too)
-go to middlefield for the flea market/cheesehouse
-roadtrip to west virginia so josh can show me cool stuff (mudriver mall, hasil adkins grave, etc)
-go to all the local diners we can (annabelle's, ruthie and moe's, earle and jackie's street trolley diner, lester's diner, porky's, dan's dogs, the white turkey drive-in) (only visited dan's dogs)
-hit up lots of flea markets/estate sales/garage sales (found a couple...)
-play at the natural history museum
-roadtrip to philly (mutter museum) and atlantic city
-go fishing
-lots of carnivals and fairs! (well, not lots, but at least one)
-go to the harley davidson museum and eat in the diner car
-car shows!! (a few...)
-see a horror movie at a drive-in
-go to an auction
-go on a picnic
-the zoo
-visit the allen county museum (weird collections of junk)
and above all,
-FIND A DEAD BODY!

here's a newly updated list of fun for this year...i am counting down the days til the sun is out and i can wear saddle shoes again!

-train ride in the valley
-clear a picnic spot in our backyard and have bbqs
-lots of bike rides now that we both have sweet vintage bikes! (starting up a bike gang would be boss, too)
-more frequent trips to the west side market
-find new places to take pictures and have adventures
-go to coney island
-go fishing the old-fashioned way (that means sitting on a dock barefoot...not taking a speedboat out on the lake with a goddamn fishfinder)
-casino roadtrip
-take a ferry to put-in-bay

-another trip to west virginia (hillbilly hotdogs, coal mine festival, etc)
-annual trip(s) to lakeview cemetery
-cleveland police museum (cleveland torso exhibit, etc)
-train museum
-try lots of new diners
-middlefield again (and eat the best turkey sandwiches at the cheese factory!)
-natural history museum
-philly/atlantic city
-harley davidson museum/diner
-car shows
-lots of flea markets/estate sales
-see a horror movie at a drive-in
-go to an auction
-allen county museum
-FIND A DEAD BODY!

new prints added to shop

it's been a minute since i added anything new to swamp rat photography, so i used today's sick time to get busy.

Photobucket

lemmy kilmister 5x7 framed print

it isn't every day you get to stand mere inches away from this guy. no joke...i seriously could have reached out and pinched him. but who would dare pinch lemmy? the man, the myth, the legend -- and he could be hanging in your living room! or bedroom! (or bathroom, for all i care!) one of rock'n'roll's great icons.

Photobucket

hasil adkins hot dog graveside tribute 5x7 print

the chances of anyone else being as crazy as we are and driving through the backroads and hollers of west virginia just to climb a hill in the middle of the woods to see this are relatively slim...so i figured the best idea would be to offer this as a print in the shop to save everyone else the trouble. don't worry, we did the hard work, now you can just sit back and enjoy the fruits of our labor. fans of hasil adkins will understand the playfulness of this piece. we couldn't think of a better way to pay tribute to "the world's greatest guitarist and one man band" than with a hot dog signoff. somewhere up in hillbilly heaven, hasil is probably cackling that crazy laugh of his...

inside hotel hot trash: put another dime in the record machine

Photobucket

i have a lot of collections that are so excessive they seem silly. who needs a whole suitcase full of vintage sunglasses? when can i possibly wear them all? but this logic sure doesn't stop me when i see a neat pair at a good price. the same goes for me and old record players. how many damn record players do i need in one house?! one in each room ain't bad, but i'm starting to exceed even that. as usual, i can't stop myself!

when i found a neat portable turntable at an estate sale this weekend, i started wondering about all the ones i have at home. josh and i did some detective work and tried to find out when each one was from.

the record player that gets all the wear and tear inside hot trash is this sears model from the seventies. i liberated this exact model from my parents basement back when i first started listening to records (and liberating my dad's records, too). after 10+ years in my possession, the belt finally started to go. somehow, i managed to find the exact same one in the thrift store where i worked right about the same time. what are the odds! this record player also features two tape deck and a working 8-track (which comes in handy for the handful of 8-tracks i actually have, including chuck berry).

Photobucket

Photobucket

featured in this installment is a record of "the beat" found at a flea market last summer for a measly $1! SUCH a good album! i wrote about paul collins in one of the first blog entries i ever did.

Photobucket

i found this portable children's model at a thrift store. i liked it because of the cute graphics, but also because of its small size. the speaker is built in and the sound comes from the little holes next to the arm. needless to say, it doesn't go very loud. i couldn't find any info about the make/model online, but i would guess it is from the 60s. i have this one sitting by my boxes of 45s so i can preview records when i'm getting ready to pack up for the radio show. just recently, it started sounding funny when i play 33s so now i guess i can only use it for 45s. hmm.

Photobucket

Photobucket

i found this portable newcomb at a thrift store. it has the built-in speaker in the front and works nicely. the only problem is that the volume button is a little finicky and sometimes you have to mess with it to get it to raise the volume. i couldn't find info about this exact model online but i found similar ones saying it is probably from 60s.

Photobucket

i got this rca victor for cheap at the thrift store because it doesn't work. at the time i figured i would just get it to sit out and look neat (forgive the dust -- i never really cleaned it up!), but now i'm actually looking into getting it working again. after some digging, i found out it is from 1954 and i saw online that other working players of the same model were going for $300+ on some websites. not that i want to sell any of these...it's just nice to know what you have sometimes! i also learned that the material used in this player is most likely bakelite...which i learned all about when i worked at the thrift store because the bosses were always looking for bakelite jewelry to make sure it didn't get sold too low. apparently it's very collectible and pretty expensive because they don't make it anymore.

Photobucket

Photobucket

i got this bad boy when i was still working at the thrift store. i thought it would be neat to take and set up outdoors because the speakers are rather large and it goes louder than most portable record players with built-in speakers. i imagined pulling it out at car shows and throwing on doo wop records :)
i don't have anywhere to set this one up in my house, so it's just been sitting next to the couch. i never looked into it until today, but i always sorta figured it looked seventies or maybe even early eighties. imagine my surprise when josh found a listing for it as a 1967 sylvania exponent! i had no idea it was that old. i'm pretty sure everything works fine on it, but i'm gonna have to pull it out again and try it just to make sure. it's neat because the record player folds out from one side and the speakers are stored on the other side. they detach and you can set them out next to the player because they have plug-in cords.

here is the beauty that i picked up from the estate sale this weekend. it is a 1957 zenith. it was marked $35 but it was half-off since we went on the last day of the sale. i plugged it in at the sale and it spun around, and the needle was still intact. what i didn't realize until i got home was that it wasn't spinning around at the right speed. other than that, the player is in great condition for its age. i don't know anything about fixing electronics, but josh took it apart and saw that it had tubes inside (old amps and radios and other electrical equipment used these -- they can be costly to repair/replace today, as they have been phased out). after checking online, he found a place where i can get the exact tubes i need for under $10, so i guess we're going to try that and see if it picks up speed. please keep your fingers crossed for me!

my 90s alternative childhood

when i was 12 and first started getting heavily into music, the year was 1994. grunge was on its way in, punk was becoming mainstream, and i was right in the middle of it all. i loved to listen to 107.9 the end and 100.7 (back in the day when they still did "the buzzard battle" every nite -- ha!). i stayed up late taping music videos off tv, especially things like 120 minutes on mtv and much music, the canadian version of mtv. of course, i dressed the part: strictly corduroys and checkered old-man pants (i didn't own a single pair of jeans until i was like 16), ironic thrift store tshirts with sayings i didn't understand, ringer t-shirts, cardigans, gas station shirts with names like "bob," and tacky plastic jewelry. i wore a clip-on nose ring and dyed my hair streaked with food coloring (my mom let me because it washed right out, but that also meant it was disastrous getting caught in the rain!). i thought i was a rebel because i had black suede converse one*stars for gym class and i refused to buy REAL athletic shoes.

Photobucket

Photobucket
awesome fashion alert: too large green day tshirt, green army jacket, pigtails with plastic hair barrettes

this was back in time when school dances were mainly playing "alternative rock" as opposed to rap and dance. we all knew how to do the dance to "personal jesus" by depeche mode and i can distinctly remember hearing "einstein on the beach" by the counting crows in the gymnasium of st. thomas moore. i remember when weezer was cool. i remember when the guys in green day were zit-faced, snot-nosed 22 year olds. i remember being the weird one out when everyone in the 8th grade was obsessing over bone thugs-n-harmony and i was freaking out that i couldn't catch the song "hobo humpin slobo babe" by whale to tape it every time it came on the radio. my first concert was bush and the toadies. i got the mallrats cassette for my birthday one year. i was a 90s alternative grrl through and through.

eventually, the 90s and i both had to stop being so awesome. but damn it if i wouldn't give anything to go back to that time again! feeling nostalgic for age 12 is one of my favorite things in the world. one of the easiest ways to transport myself is through the music, which luckily hasn't gone anywhere. years ago i made this webpage listing all the hits i could remember from the golden years of my 90s alternative childhood. i used this as the basis for a christmas gift my cousin beth (seen above in all her 90s alternative glory) and i created for our bff, andrew (seen above in the sex pistols tshirt). all three of us had similar experiences and memories of a 90s alternative childhood, so we knew it would be the perfect gift to give him. beth and i spent HOURS collecting all the tapes and cds we still had, downloading all the songs we were missing, cutting pictures out of old circus and hit parader magazines, and making mixtapes to put this box set together. we called the finished product "novocaine for the soul: the 90s alternative box set."

Photobucket

Photobucket

the box opens by pulling this nirvana patch with velcro on the back. ha.

Photobucket

we covered the box inside and out with band photos, logos, album covers, and lyrics.

inside there are fifteen 90-minute tapes. each tape has a cover that is made from a "trading card" or band photo. here you see no doubt's gwen stefani, live's ed kowalczyk, and marilyn manson's zim zum!

Photobucket

the tapes fit inside the box because we glued a plastic tape holder inside. on the inside of the tape holder there is a list of band names that fit inside going down the length of it.

Photobucket

now THAT'S a gift, huh?

obviously, i went on to bigger and (much) better things than getting stone temple pilots tapes out of the library and wearing bracelets made out of pop tabs and paperclips. but that doesn't keep me from turning up the volume and rocking out to some spin doctors if i find it on the dial.

10 songs that make me so nostalgic i want to put on a flannel and play some hacky sack:

1. formaldehyde - sons of elvis
2. good - better than ezra
3. sure shot - beastie boys
4. vasoline - stone temple pilots
5. black hole sun - soundgarden
6. what's the frequency, kenneth? - r.e.m.
7. possum kingdom - toadies
8. mmm mmm mmm mmm - crash test dummies
9. new age girl - deadeye dick
10. she don't use jelly - flaming lips
11. undone (the sweater song) - weezer
12. backwater - meat puppets

10 songs i will still rock the shit out of:

1. thunderkiss '65 - white zombie
2. hey jealousy - gin blossoms
3. banditos - the refreshments
4. uninvited - ruth ruth
5. radiation vibe - fountains of wayne
6. not if you were the last junkie on earth - dandy warhols
7. stutter - elastica
8. everlong - foo fighters
9. flagpole sitta - harvey danger
10. let's do it - paul westerberg and joan jett
11. into your arms - lemonheads
12. big and mean - reacharound

i had one more button but it sold last nite. i've also been busy restocking the shop with "cuddle with a serial killer!" pillowcases...currently, the shop has all three choices available, as well as the "pick two" option in a matching pink set. how cute! i'm also working on a new design soon, so stay tuned...
